After initially moving on loan with the option to buy last January, Davide Santon has already done enough to convince Inter Milan he is worthy of a permanent deal.
The Italian side initially took him out on loan to test his fitness after Davide spent a lengthy spell on the sidelines. However, after just ten games, the 24-year-old has already done enough to convince them to meet his pre-agreed buy out clause to make his move permanent.
The Geordie faithful may feel a little hard done by when they consider the financial side to this deal. Santon was originally purchased from Inter Milan for £5million back in 2011 – a young full-back touted as the next Maldini for a cut-price. Several years later and he has just been sold for a nominal fee of £2.8m.
Sending him out on loan in the first place seemed a strange decision, considering Newcastle’s inadequate defensive depth. After the weekends match against Everton, John Carver now only has one recognised centre half at his disposal.
With Steven Taylor and Paul Dummett sidelined through injury, and Fabricio Coloccini suspended for the next three games, Remi Streete would have been next in line to partner Mike Williamson in defense, except the Newcastle hierarchy thought it would be wise to loan him out to Rangers. Instead, Carver’s choice is simple. Either play Daryl Janmaat out of position or call up Lubo Satka from the Under 21s.
