Montpelier’s £7million-rated Morgan Sanson has emerged as a summer target for Newcastle United, who remain keen to bolster their midfielder options this summer.
Following a string of impressive performances in Ligue 1 this season, the Frenchman has attracted interest from a number of clubs – including AC Milan and the aforementioned, Newcastle.
With thirty key passes, four goals and three assists so far this campaign, Sanson has emerged as one of the league’s most prolific attacking players, despite being forced to play in a holding role on a number of occasions.
Having failed to replace Yohan Cabaye, despite Remy Cabella – who now plays right wing – being touted as the 27-year-old’s replacement, Graham Carr will look to finally secure a deep lying player this window, with Sanson as the number one priority.
“Why would Newcastle sign Sanson just months after signing Siem de Jong and Remy Cabella?” Simple.
Due to a number of long term injuries for Siem, coupled with a lack of wide midfield depth that saw Remy Cabella moved to right-wing, Newcastle have lacked a talisman to unlock the opposition’s defence several times this season.
As a result of injuries and inadequate depth out wide, Remy Cabella has now adapted to a right-wing duty, that would allow Carver, and the new head coach, to incorporate both him and De Jong into the side.
Due to the 20-year-old’s versatility, it’s more than likely that Morgan will be used as a deep lying play maker if the Magpies were to secure his signature this summer – allowing Moussa Sissoko to remain in his favoured number 10 role.
