Newcastle set to raid Kilmarnock as Fraser Stewart lined up for coaching role

Newcastle United are reportedly set to recruit Kilmarnock’s Fraser Stewart as goalkeeping coach for their under-21 side.

Scott Burns reports for the Daily Record, via Yahoo Sport, that Newcastle have headhunted Stewart to work under lead coach Robbie Stockdale.

The proposed move would leave Kilmarnock manager Neil McCann needing a replacement for his head of goalkeeping.

It follows another recent change behind the scenes at Newcastle, with Jack Ross becoming assistant sporting director.

Fraser Stewart brings development experience

Stewart joined Kilmarnock in June 2022 after working as the Scottish FA’s head of goalkeeping.

Kilmarnock’s announcement of his appointment highlighted his experience with Scotland’s under-21s and the women’s national team, including their qualification for the 2019 World Cup.

He also previously worked in Kilmarnock’s youth academy between 2012 and 2014.

That background would give Newcastle a coach with experience across academy, senior club and international football.

Newcastle’s young goalkeepers could benefit

The reported role would place Stewart within a development group that has already given opportunities to teenage goalkeepers this season.

Roman Dowell started Newcastle’s 3-1 EFL Trophy victory at York City earlier this month, with the club’s match report highlighting an important first-half save.

Stewart’s experience of mentoring young keepers would therefore be directly relevant to the proposed position.

The move remains a reported appointment, with a start date and contractual details yet to be established.
