Anthony Gordon makes blunt Newcastle admission as Barcelona move reveals ‘other qualities’

Anthony Gordon believes leaving Newcastle United for Barcelona has changed how people judge his game, with the winger arguing that his technical ability previously received too little recognition.

The England international contrasted Newcastle’s emphasis on running and aggression with the different demands he now faces in Spain.

His comments follow Roy Keane’s praise for Gordon’s performance against Spain, when the former Magpies winger scored at Wembley.

Anthony Gordon explains Newcastle contrast

Speaking to ITV, in comments reported by TNT Sports, Gordon described Newcastle as a team whose intensity brought his physical attributes to the fore.

He believes Barcelona’s approach gives greater visibility to his technique and decision-making.

“Now, I play a whole opposite style of football where my other qualities can show,” Gordon said.

The winger also suggested that teammates had recognised those strengths before the wider public did.

His assessment concerned how people in England viewed him generally, rather than singling out Newcastle supporters.

Why Gordon wanted to move abroad

Gordon explained that experiencing football outside the Premier League had become an important personal ambition.

He wanted the opportunity to demonstrate a broader range of abilities on a different stage.

Newcastle and Barcelona confirmed his transfer in May.

The latest comments provide further insight into that decision, with Gordon placing the emphasis on a change of footballing environment and the chance to challenge perceptions of his game.
