George Mair signs first professional Newcastle United contract on 17th birthday

The club confirmed the George Mair Newcastle contract news through its official channels. It marks the end of an eight-year academy journey that began when Mair joined Newcastle at Under-8 level.
The signing, reported by Chronicle Live, is a significant step for a young goalkeeper who has already trained with the club’s first-team squad.
Academy journey and official club reaction
Mair has spent close to eight years working through Newcastle’s academy system since arriving as an Under-8 player. Reflecting on his new deal, he said: “I’ve been at the club for about eight years now. When I was offered the [professional] contract, I was over the moon.”
The goalkeeper also spoke about what the contract means to him personally. “It means a lot. I’m really grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given,” Mair said.
He praised the academy staff who have guided his progress. “Newcastle has developed me and the coaching staff have helped to get me to where I am now. I’m really appreciative of what they’ve done for me and it means so much, especially signing for Newcastle.”
EFL Trophy features and senior squad integration
Newcastle gave Mair his first taste of continental football in the UEFA Youth League at just 15, throwing him into fixtures well above his age group. That early exposure has continued this season. The goalkeeper featuring in the EFL Trophy for the club’s development side.
Mair has also trained regularly with the senior squad during Matthias Jaissle’s start at St James’ Park, gaining valuable experience alongside established first-team professionals. “To have first-team exposure at my age. Training with the squad, is a really big part of my development. I can learn a lot from the older lads. Getting tips from them. It’s a great experience,” Mair said.
That kind of exposure sits alongside a wider first-team picture at Newcastle, where squad depth is being tested across every competition this season.
Under-21 target and upcoming academy progression
With the George Mair Newcastle contract now signed, his attention turns straight to Newcastle’s Under-21 side. “Right now, I want to play for the Under-21s. Be consistent in that team. Make sure I am performing well in those games,” he said.
Regular, consistent performances at that level will be key to his progression. The club is expected to monitor his development closely as the season continues. Fringe and academy players are often given chances when fixtures come thick and fast, including a Carabao Cup trip to Everton among the club’s upcoming games.
For now, Mair’s priority is straightforward. He wants to nail down a regular place for the Under-21s and keep repaying the faith shown by the coaching staff who have overseen his rise through the academy ranks.
