Lewis Hall explains why he rejected Man Utd for Newcastle

Lewis Hall has opened up on Manchester United’s summer interest and explained why committing his future to Newcastle United was ultimately an easy decision.

The England international was repeatedly linked with a move to Old Trafford during a turbulent transfer window at St James’ Park.

Newcastle had already lost several major players and Manchester United viewed Hall as a potential long-term solution on the left side of their defence.

However, Hall remained on Tyneside before signing a new long-term Newcastle contract earlier this month.

The 22-year-old has now provided his own perspective on the situation.

Lewis Hall calls Newcastle decision a ‘no-brainer’

Speaking to The Sun about Manchester United’s interest and his Newcastle future, Hall admitted that attention from another major Premier League club was flattering.

It did not change what he wanted to do.

Hall described staying at Newcastle as a “no-brainer”, pointing towards his connection with the club and his excitement about the direction Newcastle are taking under Matthias Jaissle.

That is significant because much of the discussion throughout the summer focused on whether Newcastle would be able to keep the left-back.

Read Newcastle previously reported why Manchester United failed to sign Hall after the Magpies refused to consider another major departure late in the window.

The player’s own comments now make Newcastle’s position even stronger.

This was not simply a case of the club blocking a transfer.

Hall himself wanted to remain part of the project.

New Newcastle contract ends immediate uncertainty

Newcastle subsequently removed much of the uncertainty surrounding Hall’s future by handing him a new long-term contract.

The club officially announced Hall’s new deal earlier this month, rewarding a player who has developed into one of the most important members of the first-team squad.

Hall has made more than 100 appearances for Newcastle since initially arriving from Chelsea in 2023.

Manchester United’s interest therefore came at a time when his importance at St James’ Park was increasing rather than diminishing.

The Magpies had also already made their stance clear after reports surrounding Hall’s future intensified, with Read Newcastle covering the truth around his contract situation.

His new agreement now gives Newcastle substantially greater security.

Matthias Jaissle proving important to Hall

Hall also spoke positively about working under Jaissle.

The Newcastle head coach arrived during a summer of considerable change but has quickly begun putting his own tactical ideas in place.

For Hall, that has meant retaining the attacking freedom that makes him dangerous while continuing to develop the defensive side of his game.

His performance in the recent 2-1 victory over Hull City provided another example.

Hall scored Newcastle’s second goal and was Read Newcastle’s man of the match against Hull after another influential display from left-back.

Manchester United may have viewed Hall as part of their own long-term plans.

His latest comments make clear that, for now, his focus remains firmly on Newcastle.
