The mood around Newcastle United is very positive right now. The fans have been pleasantly surprised by how well the Magpies have done to start off the Matthias Jaissle era.
Many might have even been fearing a relegation battle after how things were looking over the summer. They lost three of their best players in the form of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon. On top of that, Eddie Howe left in the middle of pre-season as well.
Talking of pre-season, Newcastle United had looked completely out of sorts under both Howe and Jaissle. So, it is impressive how they have turned on a switch just as the season has started.
These are still early days though. And Alan Shearer is predicting tougher times for the club this season, no matter how positive the picture might look right now.
Shearer makes bold prediction about Newcastle United and Sunderland
A year ago, Shearer had predicted ‘six points guaranteed’ for Newcastle United against Sunderland. The exact opposite happened as the Magpies lost both derbies.
As reported by Newcastle World, when discussing the matter now and his previous prediction, Shearer said:
“What fool said that? Let’s hope I was just 12 months early in my prediction.
“It will be a more challenging season for Sunderland this year than it was last year. I do think it will be tougher times for Newcastle as well and we’ll have to be patient.
“So, let’s wait and see. We all think we know what’s going to happen. But even the best of us can completely miss the mark.”
So, Shearer appears to believe that these will be ‘tougher times’ for Newcastle United as well. And to be very honest, you cannot brush over that prediction.
Obviously, there is plenty of excitement around the club after how well they have done to start off the season. But it is a marathon and not a race.
Why Newcastle could struggle this season
There are still quite a few holes in this squad that need to be filled. And it will be very interesting to see whether this newfound form is a ‘new manager bounce’ or the norm under Jaissle moving forward.
Newcastle United fans will be hoping that it is the latter and that Shearer is wrong with at least half of his prediction once again. Last season, the club finished 12th. So, ‘tougher times’ would be even harder to take for a fanbase that has gotten used to competing for European spots in recent times.
The dual signing of Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City and Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille does give hope though that Newcastle United could be a team on the rise this season.
Amar Dedic has been absolutely class so far as well and Tino Livramento has a real challenge to get back into the team now. And hopefully, the other summer signings will start to show their ability soon as well.
