Just like that, deadline day is upon us. Newcastle United have a lot to be happy about right now. They will complete the signing of Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille today.
But will he be the only signing that the Magpies end up making on this deadline day? Or could there be a surprise or two up their sleeve?
Newcastle United saw their squad significantly weakened over this summer transfer window. Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali left.
Despite the bright start to the campaign, including the recent win over Tonali’s Tottenham Hotspur, one would argue that the squad still has a few holes and a general lack of depth.
Newcastle United eyeing Inter Milan midfielder
According to Football 360, Newcastle United have taken the most concrete steps to sign Petar Sucic. The club have submitted an official enquiry to Inter Milan regarding the player’s current availability, contractual framework, and valuation.
Furthermore, Newcastle United executives have held direct discussions with Sucic’s representatives to outline their long-term sporting project.
The likes of Manchester United, Man City and Borussia Dortmund also hold Sucic in high regard. So, Newcastle United are not in a one-horse race.
Now, it remains to be seen if the Magpies will make a serious push to sign Sucic or this will just remain an official enquiry, without it moving past that point.
Do Newcastle still need another quality midfielder?
The club have lost two key midfielders this summer in the form of Guimaraes and Tonali. They have brought in one ready-made midfielder in the form of Nico Gonzalez.
The other two midfielders they have signed are Sean Steur and Aladaji Bamba. But neither might be ready to play consistent starter minutes throughout the season.
So, it would make sense to sign another starting-level midfielder like Sucic. But at the same time, there is a financial side of things that needs to be considered as well.
It would take a significant fee to sign someone like Sucic, especially this late in the window. It is quite likely that this could be one for the future. But then, surprising things can happen on deadline day. Never say never.
