It is safe to say that there could still be a lot of action left for Newcastle United in this summer transfer window. The club have already dealt with so many key exits.
In return, they have made some signings of their own as well. The most high-profile of them was announced yesterday, as Nico Gonzalez was presented to the fans.
Newcastle United fans will be hoping that more additions are made soon. But on the other hand, it looks like some of the club’s current players could still be eyeing an exit.
Newcastle United player wanted by Napoli
Earlier in the day, we already reported on Napoli’s interest in Nick Woltemade. Now, there are further details on that matter. These links have emerged almost out of nowhere. And Fabrizio Romano said on his YouTube channel:
Meanwhile, regarding Nick Woltemade, the Newcastle striker, Napoli made an inquiry. There was contact yesterday, and today there were new calls and new contacts. So, Napoli has made a move for Nick Woltemade. Napoli asked for information. We’ll see if it becomes a concrete or viable operation, but Napoli moved on Woltemade. So, Giovanni Manna’s moves for a striker continue. As mentioned, Marc Guiu remains a simpler option due to age and squad list restrictions, but Woltemade’s name is brand-new news from this afternoon, so let’s keep it in mind regarding Napoli’s transfer market.”
The noise around the Woltemade situation has most certainly changed over the past 24 hours. In the aftermath of the League Cup game against West Bromwich Albion, there have been suggestions that the German striker’s future at the club might be uncertain.
That is quite some distance away from suggestions from even a few days ago, when it was thought that Woltemade’s leaving would not even be entertained. That is how quickly things can change.
And the underwhelming displays from Woltemade under Matthias Jaissle might have caused Newcastle United to reconsidered his place in the club’s present and future.
Why Newcastle need to be smart with Woltemade situation
It was just last summer that Newcastle United signed Woltemade for around £64 million from VfB Stuttgart. He did not meet expectations though.
Woltemade had started off brilliantly with four goals in his first five games. But he would lose that early form pretty quickly. By the end of the campaign, he had only scored 11 times across all competitions.
Many had thought that Jaissle would be able to get the best out of his fellow German. But so far, it has not felt like there is much chance of that happening, to be very honest.
Now, Napoli have made a move, looking to sign Woltemade. It will be interesting to see if it ends up anywhere of note or just ends up being another transfer that was explored but produced nothing of substance in the end.
It is safe to say that Newcastle United would look to recoup as much as possible if Woltemade does leave. On the other hand, it is believe that Napoli would ideally like a loan deal for the striker.
