Newcastle United interested in signing former Chelsea and PSG player

One thing that Newcastle United need to add to their squad this summer is experience. Well, how about someone who has played for teams like Chelsea, PSG and AC Milan?

Newcastle United have had a tough time attracting top talents to St James’ Park this summer. It is understandable. They do not have any European football this time around.

On top of that, this is clearly a club in transition. They have lost their three best players in the same window with Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon leaving this summer. On top of that, Eddie Howe walked in the middle of pre-season as well.

So, Newcastle United need to make some signings that would lift the mood around the place. And one big-name player seems to be on their radar.

Newcastle United interested in French international

According to journalist Matteo Moretto, Newcastle United are interested in Christopher Nkunku. The French international is leaving AC Milan and has received calls from Spain and England. Borussia Dortmund are also monitoring his situation.

Nkunku was considered one of the top players in all of Europe back in his time at RB Leipzig. He was the Bundesliga Player of the Season in 21/22 and the league’s top scorer the following campaign.

A move to Chelsea did not produce the expected results though. He was thought to be the signing that would bring things back on track for the Blues. But most of the time, he found himself on the bench, as the likes Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson were ahead of him in the pecking order.

Also, let us not forget that Nkunku had his injury problems at Chelsea as well. He ended up leaving for AC Milan after two years in England. The expectation was that he would be a big success in Italy.

Unfortunately, things have not turned out like that once again. And now, it looks like Nkunku could be on the move again. Could a return to England be on the cards?

Would Nkunku be a good signing for Newcastle United?

Nkunku might not have impressed while at Chelsea, but his time as not as bad as many might think. In his second season, he did score 15 goals despite largely being a backup option.

He was also looking better at the Club World Cup, which Chelsea won, before leaving for AC Milan. So, in a team where Nkunku is one of the central figures, it might work.

At the end of the day, Nkunku is still just 28 years of age. And he might be available for a reasonable transfer fee, compared to modern standards. So, it might be worth the risk for Newcastle United, who badly need some inspiration.
