Newcastle United submit offer in blockbuster transfer update

Throughout the summer, we have seen Newcastle United struggle to complete deals for players, even when they are clearly interested. Victor Munoz ended up moving to Liverpool. Johan Manzambi picked a move to Aston Villa even though the Magpies had agreed a deal with SC Freiburg.

More recently, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg turned down a move to Newcastle United even though his club, Marseille, were obviously keen to see it happen. In the aftermath, it is believed that he has lost his captaincy at the French club.

Following the Hojbjerg transfer collapse, Newcastle United had been linked with Joao Palhinha. But once again, it looked like they were set to come out second-best.

News broke that Palhinha had agreed personal terms with Aston Villa. So, most had thought that was going to be his next destination. Yet, there is now an unexpected twist in the tale at the last minute.

Newcastle United make offer to Palhinha

Earlier today, I had covered how Bayern Munich have not been able to find an agreement with Aston Villa over the transfer of Palhinha. And now, out of nowhere, it looks like Newcastle United are the frontrunners.

According to Diego Pico, Newcastle United have entered strongly and offered a transfer and a three-year contract to Palhinha. Aston Villa have run out of options.

So, if things go according to the Magpies’ plans, they might be the ones to hijack a transfer this time around. Of course, nothing is over the line just yet.

The fans need to be careful not to get excited already. But as things stand, it feels like Palhinha could end up in a Newcastle United jersey soon.

Why Palhinha could work

Palhinha has played his best football in the Premier League. He was immense at Fulham. His displays there is what earned him the move to Bayern Munich.

Palhinha was never able to showcase his best in a Bayern Munich jersey though. He appeared to struggle with the competition. Eventually, he made a return to English football, albeit on loan, joining Tottenham Hotspur last season.

Now, his long-term future is once again up in the air. But it looks like Newcastle United are advancing in potentially bringing the 31-year-old to St James’ Park.

Having seen key players like Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes leave, weakening the midfield, this could be a phenomenal addition of experience, proven quality and leadership in the middle of the park.
