This has been a summer filled with exits for Newcastle United so far. The club have seen so many of their key players leave. Fresh faces have been brought in as well, alongside a new manager in the form of Matthias Jaissle, after Eddie Howe left in the middle of pre-season.
All this combined, you can expect to see a very different Newcastle United side next season. Everybody has seemed eager to leave after the club missed out on Champions League football after finishing 12th last season.
Amid all this, it looks like one player is keen to stay on at Newcastle United and prove his worth, even though he has been widely expected to leave this summer.
Newcastle United player wants to stay and fight for his place
According to a report from Football Insider, Jacob Murphy is keen to stay at Newcastle United to fight for his place in the team under the new manager.
Murphy has been at Newcastle United since 2017 and he has made 265 appearances for the Magpies. Now 31 years of age, it had been expected that the time had come for a parting of ways. Yet, it looks like the player himself wants to stay.
Newcastle United have already signed one new winger this summer. Bazoumana Toure has been brought in and the 20-year-old is expected to get plenty of playing time next season.
That being said, they have lost one as well in the form of Anthony Gordon. So, it is hard to see how Murphy’s playing time will be affected as a result of the moves so far in this window.
Newcastle could sign another winger
Of course, the entire story changes if the speculation around Anis Hadj Moussa comes true. It is believed that the Algerian winger is eager to join Newcastle United this summer from Feyenoord while the Magpies are willing to make a £35 million bid for him.
If Newcastle United do end up signing Moussa this summer, then that could push someone like Murphy down the winger pecking order.
There is believed to be some interest in Murphy’s signature as well. Everton are rumoured to be keen on signing the Newcastle veteran. So, if it comes down to it, he should not lack options.
But as things stand, it looks like his first priority is to continue on at Newcastle. And that is admirable, especially this summer, when so many have been happy to depart.
Someone like Murphy has a lot to offer, and not just on the pitch. Some of these youngsters who have been brought in can learn a lot from a player of his experience.
