The inevitable has finally happened. Newcastle United have found an agreement with Arsenal for the transfer of Bruno Guimaraes. The club captain was clearly eager for a move away and had agreed personal terms weeks back. The saga dragged on for a while but has finally reached its conclusion.
Now, it is time for Newcastle United to find some proper replacements. So far this summer, they have made five new additions. But how many of them are guaranteed starters?
Perhaps only one in the form of Lukas Hornicek, who is expected to take over the first-team gloves. You can probably make a case for Bazoumana Toure and Aladji Bamba as well, based on future arrivals.
More additions are needed though. Players who can come in and immediately establish themselves as starters. And it looks like Newcastle United have their eyes on a Premier League-established midfielder as Guimaraes heads for Arsenal.
Newcastle United readying bid for midfielder as Guimaraes heads for exit
According to a report from Football Insider, Newcastle United are preparing to submit a bid for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall. They are not the only ones.
Nottingham Forest are also expected to return to the negotiating table. They are another club looking to sign Bergvall from Tottenham this summer.
It is worth pointing out that there have been reports suggesting that Bergvall has informed Tottenham Hotspur that he wants to leave this summer.
It is not hard to understand why that might be the case. Just look at the signings Tottenham Hotspur have made in midfield this summer, including the addition of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a club-record £100 million.
Under these circumstances, someone like Bergvall is bound to struggle for game time. So, a move away from Tottenham might be the right step. Would he be the right signing for Newcastle United though?
Would signing Bergvall make sense for Newcastle right now?
Of course, many will question the thinking behind any move for Bergvall at this point in time. It would be bringing in another youngster to fill the experience and proven quality that has left.
In a way, those doubts are justified. But then again, Bergvall has shown that he can deliver in the Premier League, which none of the other youngsters Newcastle United have brought in this summer have done.
So, there would not be an adjustment period there. Also, it is possible that someone like Bergvall might thrive given a more prominent role at Newcastle than the current one he has at Tottenham.
