Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal takes U-turn nobody saw coming

Bruno Guimaraes is expected to leave Newcastle United this summer. He has seen his best teammates leave left, right and centre over the past twelve months. So, it is not hard to understand why the Brazilian might also want to follow suit.

He is 28 years of age. And he is coming off a solid World Cup campaign. His stock will never be higher. Then, there is the change in Newcastle United’s policy.

It does feel like the club have shifted from their aim to build a winning project. Now, it looks like they want something sustainable. But then, why would Guimaraes want to stay in a team that is not expected to compete for trophies when the Premier League champions want him?

All things considered, it had looked like news could break any day now that a deal has been agreed between Arsenal and Newcastle United. But the situation has taken an interesting U-turn.

Guimaraes to Arsenal takes sudden twist

According to Sky Sports, Arsenal’s bid for Guimaraes has been rejected by Newcastle United. The two clubs are now in direct talks over the Brazilian midfielder.

Newcastle United want the team captain to stay and he still has two years left on his contract. On top of that, there is a club option for a third year. Arsenal are now discussing internally whether to go back in with an improved offer.

That update does raise some doubts about whether a move for Guimaraes could end up collapsing in the final steps. The media reporting over the past few days had made it seem that the transfer was inevitable. Some outlets had even claimed that a deal had been agreed between the two parties.

Now though, it seems like it is not as close as thought. In fact, there is no guarantee that the move will happen, although it seem seems like the most likely outcome. It might end up getting dragged on though, just like the Alexander Isak saga.

Who could replace Guimaraes at Newcastle United?

While a move might not be as advanced as the reporting had led us to believe, that does not mean that it won’t happen. Let us continue to work under the assumption that it will go through at some point this summer. Who could replace Guimaraes in that situation?

Over the past few days, Newcastle United have been linked with plenty of midfielders. Petar Sucic of Inter Milan is the latest name to be brought up as a target.

His Croatian international teammate and cousin, Luka Sucic, is thought to be a possibility as well. He has worked extensively with Matthias Jaissle in the past.

Then there are the long-running rumours involving Brazilian midfielder Danilo. Interestingly, the noise regarding that move has gone a bit quiet lately.
