Matthias Jaissle has not been announced as the new Newcastle United manager yet, but if reports are anything to go by, it is as good as done. The German manager will be replacing Eddie Howe in the St James’ Park hot seat. The focus will now need to shift towards bringing in quality talent to strengthen the squad.
This summer transfer window has proven to be a tough one for the Magpies. They simply have not been able to keep their best players around after failing to qualify for Europe.
Anthony Gordon has left for Barcelona. Sandro Tonali has joined Tottenham Hotspur. And it looks like Bruno Guimaraes is heading to Arsenal. The likes of Nick Pope, Joe Willock and Joelinton are expected to depart as well. Rumours continue to swirl around the future of Lewis Hall too.
So, all things considered, there is a lot of work that needs to be done. And it looks like Jaissle is interested in reuniting with one of his former players.
Matthias Jaissle wants Newcastle United to sign Croatian international from La Liga
According to reports in Spain, Jaissle wants Luka Sucic to be his first signing for Newcastle United. He is currently playing for Real Sociedad.
Sucic is a full Croatian international as well. He has made 22 appearances for his national team so far and was involved in the recent World Cup as well.
At 23 years of age, he is still in the early part of his career. That being said, he has a ton of experience as well, having played more than 200 games already.
Perhaps most importantly, he has already played under Jaissle from their time together at RB Salzburg and FC Liefering. And that might end up getting him a move to Newcastle United.
Jaissle knows Sucic well
Sucic played 79 games under the management of Jaissle at RB Salzburg and FC Liefering. The Croatian midfielder produced 18 goals and 11 assists in that time.
So, one would imagine that Jaissle already knows Sucic very well. And if he does indeed want him at Newcastle United, he might have an idea of how he would fit into the team and the Premier League.
Newcastle United do badly need to strengthen in the middle of the park. They have already seen Tonali leave. Guimaraes could be about to follow, alongside others.
Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba have been signed as replacements. But neither of them might be ready to be starting in the Premier League just yet.
It remains to be seen what kind of transfer fee Real Sociedad would want to part ways with the Croatian international midfielder. That being said, one would imagine that it should not be a problem for the Magpies.
