It would be safe to say that these have been eventful 24 hours for Newcastle United. Even last morning, we would have been thinking about the direction things were heading in the transfer market, the lack of quality signings and the potential solutions still out there.
That turned completely on its head when news broke out of nowhere that Eddie Howe had decided to leave Newcastle United. The Englishman is without a doubt the club’s most successful manager in their modern history, no matter the criticism he has drawn lately.
Howe guided the club to multiple runs in Europe and a League Cup triumph, their first major domestic trophy in 70 years. We can only wish him the best moving forward.
Fabrizio Romano confirms Newcastle United news
As for Newcastle United, they will be looking to avoid what happened with West Ham United after David Moyes’ exit. So, finding the right manager is important. Curiously, it looks like one has been picked out already and it is only a matter of time before his arrival is announced.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle United will pay a €11 million compensation fee to Al Ahli for the appointment of Matthias Jaissle.
Jaissle will sign a contract with the Magpies until June 2030. The German manager will be arriving on Saturday to be unveiled as Newcastle United’s new head coach.
Of course, this is an indication that Howe’s exit had been in the works for longer than most had imagined. There have been suggestions that he had informed the club of his decision two weeks back.
But the manager stuck around to ensure that they had a replacement picked out. The 4-1 loss at the hands of Championship side Bristol City is not believed to have had any impact on the decision.
Is Matthias Jaissle the right signing?
Jaissle might not be a household name in European football, but the German coach is highly regarded for the job that he has done so far in coaching.
He was very successful at RB Salzburg. But to be honest, that is almost an expectation at the Austrian club and not considered that big of an achievement.
What he has achieved at Al-Ahli is something extraordinary though. Jaissle has won back-to-back AFC Champions League Elite titles with them.
For context, the club were playing in the second division of Saudi football even four years back. So, that deserves a lot of credit and Newcastle United fans should be more excited than concerned about the appointment of Jaissle.
