Newcastle United completed their second midfield signing of the summer recently as the arrival of Aladji Bamba was made official by the club. The Magpies brought him in from AS Monaco for a transfer fee believed to be in the region of £34 million.
Before that, the club had signed another midfielder in this window. Sean Steur had been signed from Dutch giants Ajax for around £23 million.
Is any Newcastle United fan convinced that these two will be able to fill the void left behind by the departure of Sandro Tonali and the potential exits of Bruno Guimaraes and Joe Willock? I do not think so.
Newcastle United clearly have shifted their transfer strategy and want to sign youngsters now, instead of bringing in ready-made players. But then again, this is a team that finished 12th. Weaken it further and there could be risks that are best avoided. Amid all this, it looks like the Magpies have their eyes on someone with at least Premier League experience.
Newcastle United readying bid for midfielder
According to Sports Boom, Newcastle United are preparing to a transfer bid worth more than £50 million to sign Lucas Bergvall from Tottenham Hotspur.
It has been suggested that Newcastle United would be willing to go as high as £60 million if that is what it takes to sign the 20-year-old Swedish midfielder.
Bergvall is under contract at Tottenham until June 2031. But it is believed that he has spoken to the club and would prefer a move away from North London in search of a fresh challenge.
In the recent past, there have been suggestions that Bergvall would prefer a move to Nottingham Forest over Newcastle United, because he would get more immediate game time there.
Would Bergvall be the right signing?
Bergvall is just 20 years of age. So, at the end of the day, the Magpies would still be signing a youngster. But at the same time, they would be getting someone with a decent level of Premier League experience as well.
Bergvall has made 78 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur already. 50 of them in the Premier League and seven in the Champions League. Further, he has played 14 times for the Swedish national team.
So, you simply cannot so that he is a 20-year-old wonderkid signing. Bergvall does have some real experience behind him and is certainly better placed than the likes of Steur and Bamba to come in and immediately make an impact at St James’ Park.
Now, it remains to be seen if Newcastle United do indeed end up making their move for Bergvall or if this ends up just being a rumour that ends up nowhere of substance.
