Newcastle United fans are eagerly waiting for some positive news in the summer transfer window. But unfortunately, there has not been much to cheer about for the Magpies faithful in recent days. Things do not seem to be headed in an upward trajectory either.
Until now, most of the speculation has been about the future of Sandro Tonali. It does feel like the Italian midfielder already has a foot out the exit door and could be gone as soon as an agreed is found between Newcastle United and one of the clubs interested in signing him.
News even broke earlier today that Tonali had agreed personal terms to join Tottenham Hotspur. Clearly, the presence of European football is not make-or-break when it comes to picking his next club.
Also, it looks like Tonali might not be the only high-profile player on his way out of Newcastle United this summer. One of his teammates could join him at the exit door.
Arsenal prepared to make bid for Newcastle United player
According to Ben Jacobs, Arsenal are prepared to make a formal bid to Newcastle United for Bruno Guimaraes after seeing a verbal offer via intermediaries of around £55 million rejected. The Magpies insist that they don’t wish to transfer the Brazilian midfielder, but direct club-to-club contact is now anticipated.
Obviously, Newcastle United would seek a lot more if they were to consider a Guimaraes exit. And even then, would it be the right idea this summer?
Losing Tonali and Guimaraes in the same window would significantly weaken Newcastle United. At that point, it would be hard to point the finger towards Eddie Howe.
Fans are already starting to have some doubts about where this project is headed. If they now start to see all of their best players depart, those will only grow.
Newcastle cannot entertain Bruno Guimaraes offer during World Cup
Whatever may be the case, Newcastle United simply cannot consider accepting an offer for Guimaraes right now. He is currently away at the World Cup and could increase his transfer valuation over the course of the tournament.
Guimaraes did have a positive impact in Brazil’s recent game at the World Cup. He provided a couple of assists as they won 3-0 against Scotland.
Performances like those will only enhance Guimaraes’ reputation. And even if Newcastle United part ways with him, they must do so for the highest transfer fee possible.
Right now, that £55 million offer simply cannot be entertained. Just look at some of the other transfer offers being made and fees being demanded.
