- Marco Palestra wanted by Newcastle United
- Italian also subject of interest from Inter Milan
- Fabrizio Romano says Palestra not interested in Magpies in the slightest
Marco Palestra has quickly emerged as one of the most wanted full-backs in the modern game after a stunning loan spell with Cagliari in Serie A.
And Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the future of the Italian, which is a massive blow to the Magpies’ hopes of landing him.
Newcastle United’s interest in Palestra is well documented, especially with Tino Livramento linked with a departure this summer.
However, if they want to add another full-back to their ranks this summer, they may have to look elsewhere as Palestra doesn’t seem to be intrigued by the prospect of moving to Tyneside.
Fabrizio Romano confirms Marco Palestra blow
Palestra spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Cagliari but is owned by Atalanta, who are resigned to the possibility of losing their prized asset this summer.
Speculation surrounding his future continues to dominate the back pages, but Romano’s recent update should essentially end Newcastle‘s pursuit.
Palestra does not fancy a move to St James’ Park despite the Magpies’ willingness to match Atalanta’s asking price.
The Italian, meanwhile, is believed to be open to a move to Serie A champions Inter Milan, who are in talks to complete the deal by putting forward a deal worth €45m.
Romano also adds that the aforementioned fee isn’t expected to be enough despite the player’s willingness to join Cristian Chivu’s side.
Regardless, that doesn’t seem like Newcastle’s problem as Palestra is clearly not enticed by a move to the club.
Newcastle United blow confirmed by other sources
Usually, when it comes to transfers, a lot of conflicting reports emerge.
However, Tuttomercatoweb have doubled down on Romano’s claims. They report that Palestra is not interested in moving to Newcastle United despite being intrigued by Premier League football.
Instead, he would prefer a move to Manchester City if he decides to swap Italy for Spain, with the Cityzens capable of offering him the prospect of winning trophies and playing in Europe.
The report also states that Atalanta are aiming for an auction and would demand at least €50 million to part with the young full-back.
Newcastle United spent a large part of the previous summer transfer window chasing lost causes like Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko, who secured moves to other clubs.
Palestra’s intentions are very clear, so they need to course-correct and swiftly move on to other targets to avoid another summer of rejections.
Missing out on the Italian is hardly the worst thing in the world as there is still time to make amends.
But the Newcastle United faithful are still reeling from what happened last summer, so losing out on Palestra after doing a lot of groundwork on him will undoubtedly bring back some truly terrible memories.
