The England international is set to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season, bringing his four-year stint with the club to a close.

Trippier produced a fine display in front of the home fans and was substituted late in the game to a standing ovation as the Magpies secured a well-deserved 3-1 win.

And speaking after the game, he was quick to point out the influence of Bruno Guimaraes, whose classy gesture showed exactly why he’s held in such high regard in Tyneside.

The England international was full of praise for Guimaraes, adding that the fans played their part in what was an emotional night for him.

“Bruno [Guimaraes] was top,” said Trippier via BBC Sport.

“He’s the captain but he wanted me to lead the team out. It was a bit emotional before I walked out. My oldest son is 10 and he could see all the pictures of me on the other side [behind the goal] and he understands more.

“I had my three children with me and they all noticed the flags. You have to try to be professional and focus on the game at hand.

“I’d just like to thank the fans for everything they’ve done for me since I’ve been at the club. They supported me through good performances and bad performances, unbelievable people. A great city.”

Guimaraes just gets Newcastle United

We can’t possibly say anything about Guimaraes that hasn’t already been mentioned numerous times before, both in terms of his playing ability and as a human being.

The Brazilian has conducted himself with utmost dignity and class since joining the club, and his decision to allow Trippier to lead the team out vs West Ham speaks volumes.

Guimaraes is Newcastle United’s main man and the home fans absolutely adore him for all the right reasons.

As for Trippier, he was the club’s first big signing under the new ownership and it’s safe to say he has more than just lived up to expectations.

His next destination remains unclear, but whoever gets him is getting a top personality and a truly unbelievable footballer. Best of luck for what’s next, Trips!
