Nick Woltemade finally got his name on the scoresheet as Newcastle United secured a 3-1 win against West Ham at St James’ Park.

The German broke the deadlock with a good close-range finish and had a good game overall as he was substituted in the closing stages of the game for Dan Burn.

William Osula scored a brace either side of half-time, while substitute Taty Castellanos’ goal for West Ham turned out to be a mere consolation.

Newcastle United fans were in full voice at St James’ Park as they capped off their season at home with a fantastic performance.

The ones on social media, however, couldn’t make up their minds on Woltemade as he continues to blow hot and cold at Tyneside.

Newcastle United fans divided on Nick Woltemade

The German international arrived at the club last summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £69m after making a massive impression with Stuttgart in the Bundesliga.

He was seen as the man to replace Alexander Isak after the Swedish international’s Premier League record move to Liverpool.

And after a strong start to life in England, Woltemade found himself in and out of the team, often being stationed in midfield by Eddie Howe.

However, against West Ham, he thrived as an advanced midfielder, with Jacob Ramsey and Harvey Barnes either side of him and Osula leading the line.

@winagainwinners wrote on X: “The more Woltemade gets the ball the better Newcastle will play. He and Osula looking good.”

@neilTheMagpie went on to add that Woltemade needs to do some gym work if he is to thrive at the club long term. They wrote: “Woltemade. Made up for him getting that goal mind, but if he’s staying, then he needs to bulk up in the summer because he’s still quite easily knocked off the ball.

“Lad of his size should have more physical dominance.”

And finally, @toonyjat wrote: “Woltemade is so tidy with the ball,” while @HoweWayTheLads added, “Imagine not enjoying Nick Woltemade play football.”

Woltemade’s stats vs West Ham

Woltemade was withdrawn in the 75th minute as he went off to a rapturous ovation from the home fans. His Sofascore numbers make for interesting reading:

  • Accurate passes 29/34 (85%)
  • Passes in opposition half (acc.) 23/27 (85%)
  • Passes in own half (acc.) 6/7 (86%)
  • Touches: 48
  • Goals: 1

The German international is set to be part of Julian Nagelsmann’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the summer.

After the tournament concludes, he is expected to hold talks with Eddie Howe and the Newcastle United hierarchy to decide on his future.

And if he carries on in the same vein, it is an absolute no-brainer to keep Woltemade at the club.

matchday.
