Newcastle United defender Matt Targett will remain with Middlesbrough for longer after his loan spell was extended to cover the Championship play-offs.

The Magpies defender initially joined Boro to gain regular minutes after falling out of Eddie Howe’s favour. His loan spell has now been extended as Boro continue their push for promotion.

With Targett’s future at St James’ Park still uncertain, fresh transfer interest is also beginning to emerge ahead of the summer window.

Matt Targett and Middlesbrough involved in Championship play-offs

Targett’s immediate focus will be helping Middlesbrough secure a return to the Premier League. The left-back has been a strong option for Kim Hellberg’s side during the second half of the season, offering composure and defensive stability at a key stage of the campaign.

The decision also suits the Magpies. Rather than returning to Tyneside early with limited opportunities available, Targett can continue playing competitive football and potentially increase his value ahead of the summer.

After injury setbacks and limited appearances over the last two seasons, regular minutes have been a welcome boost for the 30-year-old. Middlesbrough face Southampton in the semi-final and could then meet either Millwall or Hull City in the final.

Leeds United and Everton tracking Targett transfer

Recent reports have linked both Leeds United and Everton with the defender, with clubs monitoring his availability ahead of the next transfer window.

His Premier League experience and proven reliability still make him an attractive option, particularly for sides seeking depth and consistency at left-back. Middlesbrough could also battle to retain his services if promoted.

Although nothing is advanced at this stage, there is a growing sense that Targett’s Newcastle career is approaching its conclusion.

Summer exit likely for Targett

Since arriving from Aston Villa, injuries have disrupted his momentum and he has struggled to secure regular game time. Newcastle’s squad under Howe has evolved quickly, with younger and more dynamic options now preferred.

Financially, moving Targett on would also help the Magpies free up wages for further recruitment, with the defender’s contract expiring in the summer. The left-back played a key role during Eddie Howe’s early revival at the club, particularly during their relegation escape.

With his loan now extended, interest from other clubs growing, and his contract running down, all signs point towards a permanent exit once the season ends.
