Darwin Núñez has agreed to leave Al-Hilal and could become a free agent if his contract is terminated, according to reports. Could that be the perfect opportunity for Darwin Nunez?
The Uruguayan has been left out in Saudi Arabia, despite registering 14 goal contributions in 24 appearances this season. Núñez was removed from the club’s league squad following the arrival of Karim Benzema, with the club only able to register eight foreign players.
Núñez has been the subject of long-term interest from Newcastle United, and his potential departure could open up a significant market opportunity for the Magpies amid ongoing striker issues.
Newcastle United striker problems continue
It is no secret that Newcastle’s forward options have not exactly been firing on all cylinders this season. Yoane Wissa has struggled for minutes since his injury, Nick Woltemade has been largely unfortunate but does not appear to fit Eddie Howe’s system, and there are still question marks over William Osula’s consistency despite his recent run of form.
This has led to Anthony Gordon operating as the focal point for large parts of the season in the absence of a reliable, top-level striker option.
Newcastle are expected to see changes in the forward department this summer in light of these issues. The departure of either Wissa or Woltemade appears likely, and even William Osula could be available for transfer.
This underlines the clear need for the Magpies to sign a striker, which is set to be a priority this summer amid talk of a wider rebuild.
Several names have already been linked, with Gonçalo Ramos and Gonzalo García among the most prominent. However, news that Darwin Núñez could be available may significantly change the picture on Tyneside.
Is Darwin Núñez the answer?
It would not be a surprise to see Newcastle explore a move for Núñez this summer. In fact, the club have been linked with the Uruguayan on multiple occasions in recent years.
Núñez would appear to be a strong fit for an Eddie Howe side: extremely athletic, full of energy, quick, and always willing to run. In many ways, his skill set resembles William Osula’s, although Núñez is arguably more refined at this stage.
There will, of course, be concerns about his finishing ability, which has been questioned during his time at Liverpool.
However, Newcastle know better than most just how dangerous Núñez can be. Supporters will remember his late brace that snatched victory for Liverpool from the jaws of defeat at St James’ Park a couple of years ago.
Howe has consistently favoured a high-energy, pacey front three during his tenure, as shown by his use of Anthony Gordon over other high-profile attacking options this season.
In many ways, Núñez would be an ideal fit for Newcastle’s striker role. His ability to run in behind and rotate across the front line offers versatility that could be highly valuable, particularly given the likely departure of Gordon.
How likely is a transfer?
If reports are accurate, Núñez’s departure from Saudi Arabia is imminent.
There will undoubtedly be clubs across Europe interested in securing his signature, but Newcastle could be well placed to offer an attractive project.
At 26, Núñez is still young enough to help reduce the average age of the squad while also bringing valuable experience that could be crucial as Newcastle look to get back on track.
His market value is around £25m, though that may become irrelevant if he becomes a free agent. A return to the Premier League could also appeal to Núñez given his familiarity with the league and its demands.
The lack of European football next season could make him harder to attract to Tyneside. However, after a spell away from top-level European competition, Newcastle’s project could represent an appealing opportunity for him to return to the spotlight.
All things considered, a move for Darwin Núñez would be close to a no-brainer for Newcastle United, and there would likely be few within the club opposed to the idea.
