- Newcastle United targeting European football
- Magpies must also play for huge Premier League prize money
- How much teams earned last year
Newcastle United still have plenty to play for this season. Eddie Howe and co. are targeting European football but, even if that doesn’t happen, there are millions of pounds to be won.
The 3-1 win over Brighton this weekend keeps Magpies hopes of European football next season alive. At the start of the campaign, another year of Champions League football was the goal, but now even a Europa Conference League place is a big ask.
Howe’s side must put together a rampant run of form to achieve that and haul themselves up from 13th in the division. While trips to far-flung corners of Europe on a Thursday night may not particularly excite Magpies fans, getting into a UEFA competition would be important for the club financially.
It’s set to be a big summer in the boardroom at St James’ Park. The club may have announced record profits recently but there’s work to be done to continue to hit financial regulations.
It’s expected that Newcastle are in a position where they must sell before they buy, with first team stars Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, Lewis Miley and Tino Livramento all linked with exits.
Finishing as high up in the Premier League table could help alleviate some of those financial pressures. ReadNewcastle looks at the prize money handed out last season to see how much each club would receive if the 2025/26 campaign ended right now, with the same winnings – table correct as of 7 pm on Sunday night.

Newcastle United could bank an extra £18 million
The biggest earnings in the Premier League come from broadcast rights with 20th place banking at least £100 million when that is combined with prize money.
Top flight sides received a total of £2.83 billion last season, made up of six payments through the Premier League’s central revenue system. All 20 automatically receive around £96.9 million through an equal share based on domestic and international broadcast deals.
The prize money handed out each season does change but last term the difference was around £2.7 million per position. That means that if the Magpies were to climb from 14th to 6th, they’d have an extra £18 million to play with.
