- Newcastle United fans react to Anthony Gordon absence
- England international said to have picked up hip flexor injury
- Situation reminds Magpies supporters of Alexander Isak debacle
Newcastle United fans have been reacting to news that Anthony Gordon has picked up a hip flexor injury this week and will miss out against Bournemouth this afternoon.
It’s been a tumultuous week for the England international. Gordon came under fire for a sub-par performance against Crystal Palace last time out, receiving a 4/10 rating from ReadNewcastle.
The mood around the player wasn’t helped this week by reports that the winger would seek to leave St James’ Park this summer, feeling that he had ‘outgrown‘ the current project on Tyneside.
Anthony Gordon absent for Newcastle United this afternoon
Gordon joined Newcastle from Everton for £45 million in January 2023 and has gone on to register 39 goals and 28 assists in 152 outings. The winger has 10 goals in 12 Champions League outings this season, but has netted just six in 26 league fixtures
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Eddie Howe had not mentioned any injury to the player but Gordon was not included in the squad to face Bournemouth today.
The club statement read: “There are three changes to the starting XI. Joelinton is suspended – this is the first game of a two-match ban for accumulating ten bookings – and Anthony Gordon has a minor hip flexor injury. Jacob Murphy drops to the bench.
“Jacob Ramsey, Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga come in. With all five of the team’s leadership group named as substitutes, Sandro Tonali wears the captain’s armband.”
Newcastle fans think back to Alexander Isak debacle
The timing of the injury has obviously turned heads of Newcastle. One social media user wrote: “I wish we would control the narrative more, as everyone is allowed to be sceptical of that. A lot of talk in the papers, Howe press conference, then a ‘slight’ injury. Why can’t we call a spade a spade.”
Another joked: “He’s too busy buying a house. Just not in Newcastle.”
There’s certainly a feel to the situation that is familiar for Magpies supporters. Former Newcastle talisman Alexander Isak struggled with injuries as his time on Tyneside dwindled to an end, before moving to Liverpool last summer.
One fan claimed that ‘I’ve seen this story before’. Another pulled out the receipts and wrote ‘same vibes’ as they quoted a post shared by Newcastle about Isak in July 2025.
That old post read: “Eddie Howe has an almost fully-fit squad to choose from, however Alexander Isak misses out with a thigh injury.”
