- Newcastle United credited with transfer interest in AFC Bournemouth defender
- Marcos Senesi also linked with Liverpool
- Tottenham Hotspur appear to emerge as frontrunners in race
Newcastle United have seen hopes of signing AFC Bournemouth centre-back Marcos Senesi on a free transfer this summer dealt a potentially fatal blow by Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Football Insider this week claimed that the Magpies have been ‘heavily linked’ with the 28-year-old, who had also been added to the transfer shopping list at Aston Villa and Juventus.
However, in a fresh update shared by The Athletic on Friday, it appears as if Spurs are the most likely candidates to sign Senesi. The defender is currently set to become a free agent in July.
It’s added that no deal has yet been finalised, even though talks are ‘advanced’. Any move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would be dependent on Roberto De Zerbi’s side securing top flight football next season.
Tottenham in ‘advanced talks’ with Newcastle United target
Newcastle United are expected to make signing a new centre-back a priority come the end of the campaign. Fabian Schar is out of contract and injury problems for Sven Botman have proved difficult to manage.
However, the Magpies may have to turn attention to other targets. One of those could be Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande, who could be available for £40 million.
Newcastle could have hopes of signing Senesi boosted should they move to appoint Andoni Iraola this summer. The current Cherries manager has confirmed that he will be leaving the club and has been touted as a potential Eddie Howe replacement at St James’ Park.
Andoni Iraola on next destination
Speaking about his future today, Iraola said: “The decision was not about any other club, there was no other club involved, it was about either continuing here or not continuing here. I don’t know what I want to do next season.
“I don’t know if I am going to coach a team, a club. I don’t know if I am going to coach an international team. I don’t know if I am going to coach in this continent. I have no idea what is going to happen. I don’t know if you are going to believe me but it is the truth. And also I don’t have any rush to want to know it. I have taken a big decision for me, now I want to focus on what we have in this moment. These next six games are massive for us.”
