  • Newcastle remain in strong position

Newcastle United could face increasing pressure to retain Sandro Tonali this summer, with FC Barcelona reportedly emerging as the latest European giant to show interest in the midfielder

The 25-year-old has been a key figure since arriving from AC Milan in a record-breaking £55 million deal. His importance to Eddie Howe’s system has only grown since his arrival.

Tonali has appeared 47 times in competitions this season, posting three goals and seven assists. A potential departure has been a major talking point amid the likelihood of the Magpies missing out on Champions League qualification.

Barcelona Join Tonali Race

Barca are believed to be assessing midfield options as they plan for the future, with the Italian viewed as a player capable of dictating play at the highest level.

Tonali has long been admired for his composure, passing range and ability to control tempo, a trait that aligns with the traditional Barcelona midfield profile. Reports suggest he is among several names under consideration as the Catalans look to strengthen in that department.

However, Hansi Flick’s Blaugrana are not alone. Interest in Tonali has grown across Europe, with multiple clubs, including Manchester United, monitoring his situation.

Tonali’s Importance at Newcastle

Since joining the Magpies in 2023, Tonali has become a central figure in midfield. Despite an early setback in life in Tyneside, he has only gone on to prove why he was regarded as one of the top young midfielders across Europe.

Tonali’s role in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup win further underlined his importance, playing a key part in the club ending a long 70-year wait for a domestic silverware. Still only 25 years old, Tonali represents both quality and long-term value, making him a vital presence for the Magpies.

Newcastle Must Withstand Pressure

As things stand, Newcastle are in a strong contractual position with Tonali tied down long-term until 2029, which means any potential offer would yield a significant transfer fee.

However, failure to secure a spot in Europe could complicate matters, with reports suggesting more key figures at the club may consider their future if the club fails to qualify for the Champions League

For Newcastle, keeping hold of Tonali is ever so important. As interest from clubs like Barcelona intensifies, this summer could prove a defining moment in determining whether the club continues up on its trajectory or faces another transfer fiasco.
