  • Newcastle in advanced talks for Ecuadoran star
  • Magpies continue their academy development
  • Standout players from Independiente make a name for themselves

Newcastle United look set to make their first signing of 2026, as several reports have emerged about Ecuadoran 16-year-old Johan Martinez. The striker is another talent from the highly praised Independiente del Valle academy.

Journalist Rudy Galetti reports that the deal is in the advanced stages for one of South America’s brightest young stars. The Magpies have had to fight off a lot of competition from some of Europe’s best to formalise a deal for Martinez.

Martinez offers versatility across the attack, capable of playing out wide or down the middle. Due to the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union, he won’t be able to feature in Black and White until he turns 18.

Newcastle Focus on Young Talent

Since the Saudi Arabia Investment Fund took over the Tyneside outfit, there has been a lot of growth on and off the pitch. The Saudi owners have made significant investments in the club’s infrastructure, with an emphasis on improving the academy and providing a better pathway for young players into the first team.

Back in December, the Shields Gazette reported on the club’s £10 million investment into their academy.

In recent years, more players have come through the academy, such as Lewis Miley and exciting youngster Sean Neave, who made his Champions League debut against Qarabag.

However, the club has also been trying to find new talent to help it grow. In 2022, they signed Garang Kuol and Alex Murphy, with the latter making some appearances this season for the St James’ Park outfit.

The following year, they spent £1 million on Alfie Harrison from Manchester City and secured Yankuba Minteh from Danish side OB, whom they sold a year later for £30 million.

Last summer, they signed Korean forward Seung-soo Park from K League side Suwon Bluewings, and the 18-year-old has been impressive in the U21’s squad

Martinez is set to be the next name on the list of exciting young talents who now have a clear path to get into Eddie Howe’s team.

Independiente Talent Factory

The Ecuadorian club is renowned for having one of the best academies in world football, with so many talented footballers coming through their ranks.

In 2020/21, they sold Moises Caicedo to Brighton in a €4 million deal, while in the same season Piero Hincapie joined Argentinian club CA Talleres. Now, both players are playing for two of the biggest clubs in the Premier League, at Chelsea and Arsenal.

The following summer, they sold William Pacho to Royal Antwerp, who is currently a Champions League winner with PSG.

Since then, they have had a plethora of talented youngsters who have gone on to make a name for themselves in Europe, such as Joel Ordonez, Kevin Rodriguez and Kendry Paez, while other players such as Deinner Ordonez and Juan Angulo have been linked to elite sides.

The Toon Army will be hoping Martinez can have a similar career path to others who have shared the Independiente de Valle shirt.

Unfortunately for Howe, he won’t have the luxury of having him on Tyneside next season, but they will hope his development continues before he arrives in England.
