- Newcastle forward linked with Liverpool
- Eddie Howe won’t want to lose him
- Another big name could follow Isak to Anfield
Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon has been linked with a move back to Merseyside as the Reds are monitoring the 25-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window.
With Arne Slot’s side experiencing a drop in performance this season, after being crowned Premier League champions last year, according to TEAMtalk, they have identified the Magpies winger as a potential replacement for Cody Gakpo.
The English forward has previously been linked with a move to Anfield since the arrival of Slot in 2024. He has been a reliable option for Eddie Howe since moving to Tyneside in 2023.
With the St James’ Park outfit potentially missing out on Europe if results go against them, many top players have been linked away from the club.
Gordon’s impact on Tyneside
Since he arrived at Newcastle, Gordon has been the definition of a Howe forward. A player with electric pace who can trouble the opponents for a full 90 minutes.
Against Barcelona, he made his 150th appearance in Black and White, where he has scored 38 times and registered 28 assists.
This season, he hasn’t found it easy in a newly rebuilt attack alongside new faces like Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa and Anthony Elanga. In 24 Premier League appearances this season, he has only recorded seven goal contributions.
Gordon’s form has come through the Champions League, where he has been clinical in front of goal, with 10 goals in 12 games. The only player who has scored more in the competition this year is Kylian Mbappe.
His quality has been noticed by many of Europe’s biggest clubs, with Liverpool showing significant interest. It is well documented that he grew up supporting Liverpool and was part of the academy until he was released at 11.
The 25-year-old has also spoken about his possible move to Liverpool in 2024, which collapsed.
In an interview with the Express, he said, “I had to get my head around that [idea of joining Liverpool] to begin with, and then to get my head around it again [when it didn’t happen] was hard.”
Gordon’s former teammate, Alexander Isak, joined Liverpool in the summer for a £125 million fee, a sour deal for both clubs. There is animosity between them which would only intensify if the Reds were to swoop for the English attacker.
Signs of starting again
In the past few weeks, some of Howe’s most high-profile players have been linked with moves away from the club. Tino Livramento has been linked to two big clubs in England, and club captain Bruno Guimaraes has had strong interest from Manchester United.
Sandro Tonali’s agent has also spoken out about his future amid talk of a possible move to Arsenal or Manchester United. Gordon has now been linked away to both Liverpool over the past few weeks, and it’s now a discussion of who is likely to stay.
The good news is that the club are planning to extend Lewis Hall’s contract following a series of brilliant games. This is ideal ahead of the summer, but questions remain over the long-term plan.
Newcastle must get Europe if they are to have a strong hand heading to the summer, but even with that, it’s unlikely all their top stars will stay put.
It looks set to be an interesting window for Newcastle, as the rebuild of Howe’s first squad is set to be fully underway, and it’s down to the English manager and the higher-ups to build something even stronger than what stood before.
