Newcastle face Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16

Newcastle will take on Spanish giants, Barcelona, in the Champions League round of 16, as Eddie Howe’s side looks to continue their European adventure.

The first game will take place under the lights of St James Park after they played in the knockout round, overcoming Qarabag 9-3 on aggregate.

The first leg is set to be played on March 10th, while the game at the Nou Camp is on March 18th.

Barcelona finished 5th in the group stage, beating Danish side FC Copenhagen 4-1 in the final group game.

The two teams have already faced each other this season, as the Catalonia side came away from St James Park with three points thanks to a Marcus Rashford double in a 2-1 win.

The last time Barcelona played in England, they suffered a staggering 3-0 defeat against Chelsea back in November.

There is history in this fixture, as the Magpies first ever game in the Champions League came in 1997 against Barcelona.

A Tino Asprilla hat trick set St James Park on fire that evening in a stunning 3-2 win, considered one of Newcastle’s best European games.

Since then, Barcelona have beaten Newcastle in every other game the teams have met, which currently stands at four wins.

The winner of this tie will meet either Atletico Madrid or Tottenham Hotspur in the Quarter Finals.
