Newcastle United may yet change their transfer approach heading into the January transfer window.
That is according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, who understands that this approach to signing players could change because of the Magpies’ current position in the Premier League.
Saudi Arabia-based Public Investment Fund may see the second half of the campaign as an opportunity to build on their push for Champions League qualification.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Downie said: “I think the World Cup break will give the owners a chance to look ahead to the January transfer window and make a decision as to what kind of tact they’re going to have.
“I would not be surprised if this start to the season has slightly altered their thinking as to how they’re going to go for it.
“They could now look at this, should they pick up points in the last few games, and think ‘we’ve got a chance here of not just getting into Europe, but potentially the Champions League’ because you see so many of the big clubs struggling in different ways at the moment.”
Why not?
Even the most optimistic of Newcastle fans would not have predicted a push for Champions League qualification this early on in their lifespan as a Saudi-owned asset.
Yet, here they are, currently sat in third place with the joint-best defence in the league and scoring goals for fun.
Eddie Howe has already proven himself as the adequate figure to lead the club forward and can be trusted with a respectable transfer kitty, come January.
With the foundations of the squad in place, the Toon could most certainly afford to bring in a high-profile signing to bolster the squad across a short and long-term basis.
The likes of Brighton star Moises Caicedo and Shakhtar gem Mykhaylo Mudryk are two stars who have been linked. They’re both young with a lot of potential and would bring quality to the squad instantly whilst also future-proofing it.
There will of course be some hidden gems that shine in the upcoming World Cup, which may also take Howe and co.’s fancy.
Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see as to how the club navigate the winter window, but either way, it’s an exciting one for fans.
