Newcastle United are in the mix to sign Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita next summer, according to recent reports.
That is according to Italian outlet MilanLive, via Sport Witness, who tip Tyneside as a potential destination for the star who’s contract expires in June 2023.
It is said that Newcastle will face competition from AC Milan, West Ham and Borussia Dortmund in their venture in signing the star on a free contract.
Ambitious, but astute
Keita set Liverpool back by a cool £48million fee and has suffered with a number of injury setbacks during his spell of around four years.
His latest setback has so far seen him miss 87 days worth of football, equating to 18 games missed.
Though, that should still not put Newcastle off signing him on a free at the end of the season.
As Rahman Osman stated last year, Keita was having a “monster-class” before an unfortunate injury. It’s been the story of his time in England, but if a club can get him fit, he represents a brilliant depth option at the bare minimum, if his injury woes continue that is.
Failing that, he would be a sure-fire starter for Eddie Howe.
Despite his fitness issues, Liverpool still managed to get 23 Premier League games out of the 27-year-old last term.
Ironically, Keita’s data profile on FBref sees Bruno Guimaraes suggested as his number one match.
With the pair’s ability to shine in both phases of the game, we would surely see an unbelievable midfield partnership on Tyneside.
