Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has stated that Callum Wilson is ‘doing everything’ to ensure a swift return to action at Newcastle.

Wilson is working his way back to fitness having been ruled out through injury for the past four Premier League games.

The 30-year-old limped off with a hamstring injury after scoring in the Toon’s 3-3 draw with Manchester City back in August.

Speaking on his Premier FPL Injuries YouTube channel, medical expert Ben Dinnery confirmed that Wilson was in contention for the most recent fixture with Bournemouth but the club decided not to risk him, opting to give him the two weeks over the international break to continue his rehab.

Now Downie has claimed that the striker is itching to return, with a missed opportunity perhaps in the back of his mind.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “By all accounts, Wilson’s doing everything behind the scenes to get himself back involved as soon as he can.

“I mean he’ll probably be looking at the England squad last week and seeing Ivan Toney getting called up and thinking, you know, if I kept myself fit and maybe scored a couple of goals, that could have been me.

“So, a difficult situation for him but he’s been there and he’s done it before and I think he’s strong-minded enough now that he’ll just kind of want to get back as soon as he can.”

Indeed the 5 ft 11 in ace made a fast start to the season, scoring in each of the Tynesiders’ first two home games.

He admitted himself that it was ‘disappointing’ to suffer a ‘little setback’ (BBC Radio 5 Live via Daily Mail) having hit the ground running and perhaps he could have been in Gareth Southgate’s thinking prior to his injury.

However, with a troubled history in terms of fitness, last season’s top scorer will be hoping to avoid further disappointment by ensuring that he recovers correctly. He could well be needed for the trip to face Fulham considering Alexander Isak’s release from international duty with Sweden, following his own injury concerns.
