Newcastle handed potential blow in quest to sign Andrey Santos

Newcastle United target Andrey Santos has signed a contract extension until 2027 in Brazil.

The 18-year-old starlet has become the subject of interest from a host of clubs around Europe in recent months with TNT Sports now pitting Newcastle alongside Barcelona and Flamengo as potential suitors following previous reports listing Wolves, Benfica, Monaco and AC Milan with an interest in the Vasco da Gama midfielder.

His current employers have however negotiated a contract renewal lasting until 2027 which puts the Brazilian Serie B side in a strong position when it comes to any potential sale.

The six-cap Brazil U16 prospect was in the final 12 months of his contract before signing an extension after only joining the Rio de Janeiro-based club in January.

He has scored five goals in 23 appearances despite playing mainly as a holding midfielder and has been described as the ‘highlight of the team’ by TNT and journalist Rodrigo Coutinho has praised the teenager in the past claiming that he will be a ‘great midfield player’.

However, it remains to be seen what sort of fee Vasco will command for Santos having agreed improved terms and one would suspect that the previous asking price of €8m (£6.8m) will be greatly increased and with samba stars Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton thriving on Tyneside it will be interesting to see if PIF do decide to take a chance on the highly-rated youngster.
