Journalists say Nick Pope was ‘very good’ v Crystal Palace

Newcastle United drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon and Nick Pope was one of many players who impressed. The 30-year-old was a rock between the sticks and made a series of brilliant saves to earn the Magpies a clean sheet.

From a close-range stop of Jean-Philippe Mateta’s effort to saving a low drive from Odsonne Edouard, Pope made nine saves on the day and was arguably Newcastle’s Man of the Match. Eddie Howe showed him a lot of faith upon his arrival by taking out Martin Dubravka, but his faith has been vindicated.

Lee Ryder of Chronicle Live gave Pope a player rating of 9/10 and said he put in a ‘superb display’ against the Eagles. Dominic Scurr of Shields Gazette gave the shot-stopper a player rating of 8/10 and said he put in a ‘very good performance’.

The England international has made six Premier League appearances for Newcastle this season, conceding six goals and keeping three clean sheets. Pope boasts an 82.9% save percentage from 35 shots on target faced and is performing two goals below his expected goals tally (8), so he’s having a great start to life in the North-East.
