Newcastle exit hasn’t gone well for Dwight Gayle

Dwight Gayle finally left Newcastle United in pursuit of regular first-team football over the summer, joining Stoke City on a two-year-deal. But his move to the Britannia Stadium hasn’t quite gone to plan as the 32-year-old has been short of goals.

Gayle has made seven appearances in all competitions for the Potters, scoring zero goals with one assist. Stoke have scored one or less goals in four of their six Championship games this season, however, so they aren’t the most prolific side.

The 32-year-old was expected to hit the ground running back in the second tier after scoring 59 goals with 17 assists from 106 Championship games, but Gayle is having a slow start to life in the Midlands. Nevertheless, he did make the right decision to leave Newcastle.

Chris Wood, Callum Wilson and new-boy Alexander Isak would have kept Gayle on the sidelines for the majority of the season. And the 32-year-old’s 26 goals from 146 Premier League games suggests he wasn’t good enough for top-tier football either, so dropping down a division can hopefully get the best from him.

In other news, Newcastle exit hasn’t gone well for Isaac Hayden

matchday.
