Journalists say Chris Wood ‘lacked impact’ against Wolves

Chris Wood was handed a rare start by Eddie Howe in Newcastle United’s trip to face Wolverhampton Wanderers, but he underperformed and was substituted in the second half as the Magpies bagged a late goal to rescue a point at Molineux.

The 30-year-old had been reduced to cameo appearances in Newcastle’s first three Premier League games but was given the chance to lead the line in Callum Wilson, but Wood’s struggles in front of goal continued and Howe gave him little more than an hour before taking him off the pitch.

Lee Ryder of Chronicle Live gave the New Zealand international a player rating of 6/10 and said he ‘lacked any real impact’ against Wolves, though he acknowledged that the service in to him wasn’t great. Dominic Scurr of Shields Gazette said Wood ‘offered no threat’ at Molineux.

Against Wolves, Wood played for 64 minutes, had 13 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 87.5% of his eight passes, created one chance, had two shots with 50% hitting the target, blocked one shot and gave away two fouls.

The 30-year-old has made five appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal.
