Eddie Howe is trying to address his side’s lack of goals by signing a prolific wide forward this summer and the latest name on Newcastle United’s radar is Marco Asensio.

Sky Sports said days ago that the 26-year-old struggled for playing time at Real Madrid last season and is out of contract next year, so Los Blancos may have to cash in this summer rather than risk losing him for nothing in 2023.

Paddy Kenny believes Asensio would be an ‘incredible’ signing for Newcastle as he’s not yet reached his peak. He told Football Insider: “If they are going for a winger, he’s an option. He has played a lot of games for Real Madrid and he has loads of experience as well. He is also a Spanish international.”

Asensio joined Real from RCD Mallorca in 2015 and has gone on to make 235 appearances in all competitions, scoring 49 goals with 24 assists. The Spaniard, who’s had a hand in 11 goals from 29 caps, may have played his final game for Real.

Last season, Asensio made 42 appearances across the board, scoring 12 goals with two assists, but the 26-year-old started only 19 of 38 La Liga games (50%) and two of 13 Champions League outings (15%), so his future is up in the air. Asensio would be a regular at Newcastle, but it remains to be seen if he believes in the project.

Kenny added: “If Newcastle could get a name like that in from Real Madrid, it just shows their intent again. It would be an incredible signing. I think it would be a good signing, he is a great age.

“I know he hasn’t got Premier League experience but some of the other players they bought didn’t have that experience. You just have to hope your scouting system is right and he is good enough for the Premier League.”

Asensio scored more league goals (10) than Callum Wilson (8), Allan Saint-Maximin (5) and Bruno Guimaraes (5), so he would improve the squad.
