Anthony Gordon could improve Newcastle if signed

Eddie Howe is in the market for a prolific wide-man this summer as Allan Saint-Maximin (35 PL games, 5 goals, 5 assists), Ryan Fraser (27 PL games, 2 goals, 3 assists), Jacob Murphy (33 PL games, 1 goal, 2 assists) and Miguel Almiron (30 PL games, 1 goal, 0 assists) have been far from prolific.

Sky Sports News said on Wednesday afternoon that Newcastle are interested in Everton’s Anthony Gordon and Mike McGrath of the Telegraph believes a deal could cost the Magpies £35m, but it remains to be seen if Everton will accept.

The 21-year-old is highly-rated at Goodison Park, having risen through the youth ranks to the first-team, but he might be lured away from Merseyside as Everton narrowly escaped relegation last season. The Toffees need the money too, so they might be tempted to accept £35m.

Gordon would improve the Newcastle squad. Last season, he scored more Premier League goals (4) than Fraser, Murphy and Almiron, created more chances (35) than Joelinton (29), Fraser (25), Murphy (20) and Almiron (17) and had more successful dribbles (38) than Joelinton (37), Almiron (27), Murphy (13) and Fraser (1), so he’d be an upgrade.

Talks are still at an early stage, so time will tell if Howe lands Gordon’s signature. If Newcastle are willing to pay £35m, it’s hard to see the 21-year-old turning them down. Everton finished 16th last season and sold Richarlison, so they aren’t expected to pull up trees in 2022/23.

In other news, Newcastle don’t need to sign Nathan Ake

matchday.
