Eddie Howe is looking to add goals to his side as 11 other Premier League clubs scored more than Newcastle United last season. Kevin Campbell floated the idea of Newcastle signing Jesse Lingard as the 29-year-old’s contract expired at Manchester United this summer, but would he be a good acquisition?
Lingard was on Newcastle’s radar back in May, but his wage demands proved too lofty for the Magpies to match. The England international has underwhelmed at Old Trafford for the longest time, so it’s surprising he’s dawdling on choosing a new deal.
Lingard restored his reputation during a loan spell at West Ham United (January 29, 2021 – May 31, 2021) with 16 Premier League appearances, nine goals and five assists, but the 29-year-old hasn’t been as prolific before or after his stint with the Londoners.
2021/22
16 league appearances for Manchester United, scoring two goals with zero assists
2020/21
16 league appearances for West Ham United, scoring nine goals with five assists
2019/20
22 league appearances for Manchester United, scoring one goal with zero assists
2018/19
27 league appearances for Manchester United, scoring four goals with three assists
Lingard won’t cost Newcastle a transfer fee, but would the Magpies even be considering him if he wasn’t free?
