Newcastle signing Lodi over Targett would make no sense

Newcastle United started the season with Paul Dummett, Matt Ritchie and Jamal Lewis to choose from at left-back, but Eddie Howe brought in Matt Targett from Aston Villa in January and made the 26-year-old his first-choice for the remainder of the campaign.

The Magpies can sign Targett permanently for £15m this summer, but Howe will weigh up all his options before making a decision. One option is for Newcastle to sign a different left-back which TuttoMercatoWeb believe could happen.

Renan Lodi is reportedly on the Magpies radar and could be subject to a €25m (£21.3m) bid this summer. The 24-year-old joined Atletico Madrid from Clube Athletico Paranaense in 2019 and has gone on to make 116 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals with nine assists.

Lodi has been a regular at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, playing in 40 games across the board this season, so Atleti might not want to sell. Newcastle have a better option available to them in Targett too, so why would Howe waste his time on Lodi?

Targett has been outstanding during his loan spell this season and would be cheaper than Lodi, so it’s surely a no-brainer to sign him permanently. Supporters want to see it, and the 26-year-old is happy in the North-East, so Howe should keep him there.

In other news, Newcastle have difficult decision to make with Jamal Lewis

matchday.
