Newcastle United struck late to beat Leicester City 2-1 on Sunday and Matt Targett was one of many players who shone. The 26-year-old started on the left of a defence that featured Dan Burn, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth and was outstanding in both boxes.
Targett frequently turned over the ball with more interceptions than any other player, and he was effectively offensively too, whipping in the most accurate crosses at St James’ Park. He also played a part in Newcastle’s winning goal at the death too.
Matt O’Connor-Simpson of 90min gave Targett a player rating of 7/10 and said he did well to contain James Justin and Ayoze Perez. O’Connor-Simpson also credited the left-back for his work in the build-up to Newcastle’s winner, wrestling the ball back and feeding Joe Willock to start the counter-attack.
Lee Ryder of Chronicle Live gave Targett a player rating of 9/10, saying he was ‘elegant’ against Leicester and ‘controlled the game’. Dominic Scurr of Shields Gazette gave the 26-year-old a player rating of 7/10 and was ‘steady’ at the back.
Against Leicester, Targett played for 90 minutes, had 52 touches, won three aerial duels, completed 65.2% of his 23 passes, created two chances, had one shot on target, whipped in three crosses with 66.66% finding a teammate, made four tackles, had four interceptions, made two clearances and won one freekick.
