Journalists say Targett had a ‘rare off day’ v Tottenham

Newcastle United suffered their third consecutive Premier League defeat with a 5-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur and Matt Targett was one of many players who delivered a below-par performance. The 26-year-old has impressed since joining on loan from Aston Villa but wasn’t at his best in North London.

Dominic Scurr of Shields Gazette gave Targett a player rating of 3/10 and said he had a ‘rare off day’. Lee Ryder of Chronicle Live gave him a player rating of 4/10 and said he ‘could not live’ with Dejan Kulusevski. Jordan Cronin of Newcastle World gave the 26-year-old a player rating of 3/10 and said it was his ‘worst display’ since joining. Sean Walsh of 90min gave Targett a player rating of 2/10 and noted how Emerson Royal made his day a living hell.

Against Tottenham, Targett played for 90 minutes, had 44 touches, failed to win an aerial duel, completed 88.9% of his 27 passes, failed to create a chance, made two tackles, failed to register a shot, whipped in just one accurate cross, made one interception and made three clearances.

The 26-year-old has made eight appearances in all competitions for Newcastle, but his showing on Sunday was his worst by some distance.
