Manquillo was ‘poor’ and frequently ‘caught out’ v Tottenham

Newcastle United were thrashed 5-1 by Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon and Javier Manquillo was one of many players who underperformed. The 27-year-old was frequently caught napping and was culpable for two goals before being hooked in the second half by Eddie Howe.

Dominic Scurr of Shields Gazette gave Manquillo a player rating of 3/10 and said he was ‘caught out of position’ on a number of occasions. Scurr also said the right-back was lacking ‘quality’ in North London. Lee Ryder of Chronicle Live gave Manquillo a player rating of 3/10 and said he ‘can’t have any complaints’ at being substituted for a woeful performance.

Jordan Cronin of Newcastle World gave Manquillo a player rating of 4/10 and noted how he lost his man a number of times during the game. Sean Walsh of 90min gave him a player rating of 2/10 and blamed him for two goals.

Against Tottenham, the uncapped Spaniard played for 58 minutes, had 31 touches, failed to win an aerial duel, completed 90.9% of his 22 passes, failed to create a chance, made one tackle, failed to whip in an accurate cross, made two clearances, failed to make an interception and failed to make a successful dribble.

Manquillo has made 21 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal with two assists, but he’s unlikely to keep his starting place at right-back when Kieran Trippier returns from injury.
