Newcastle United followed up their heavy defeat to Leicester City with a 3-1 loss at Liverpool on Thursday night and Jonjo Shelvey came in for criticism for a costly mistake he made. The 29-year-old went from hero to zero in less than 20 minutes after scoring a brilliant opener before gifting Liverpool a goal which saw them take the lead.
Shelvey wasn’t all bad at Anfield. He played some nice direct football at times and nearly scored from a second half freekick, but the England international played a terrible backpass that led to Liverpool’s second goal and turned his back for their third goal from distance, so he was somewhat culpable for two of their three efforts. Fans on social media weren’t happy and let him know.
Against Liverpool, Shelvey played for 90 minutes, had 45 touches, completed 71.4% of his 35 passes, had two shots with one hitting the target, made one tackle, had one interception, blocked one shot, had one successful dribble and won one freekick.
The 29-year-old has made 10 Premier League appearances this season, scoring one goal. He barely featured earlier in the campaign due to a calf injury but has been a regular since returning in mid-October. Shelvey hasn’t been the most consistent, however, so it leaves Eddie Howe with difficult decisions to make.
