Fans on social media praise ‘unreal’ Jonjo Shelvey for ‘awesome’ performance

Newcastle United’s season has officially begun following a long-awaited victory over Burnley on Saturday afternoon. The Magpies beat the Clarets 1-0 at St James’ Park and Jonjo Shelvey put in a performance that rolled back the years.

The 29-year-old came in for criticism for some poor performances under Steve Bruce but has improved since Eddie Howe replaced the ex-manager and was praised by supporters on social media for his latest showing. Shelvey was given a player rating of 8/10 by Chronicle Live.

Against Burnley, Shelvey played for 90 minutes, had 62 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 81.4% of his 43 passes, created three chances, had two shots, whipped in 12 crosses, made one clearance, gave away one foul, had one successful dribble and won one freekick.

The 29-year-old has made eight Premier League appearances this season, amassing 551 minutes of playing time. Shelvey missed the start of the campaign due to injury but has been a regular since making his return. Fans may have felt it wasn’t earned after inconsistent performances previously, but he certainly justified his place in the side against Burnley.
