Dwight Gayle had an uncertain future at Newcastle United this summer as he struggled for form and playing time last season while being out of contract at the end of the campaign.

The 31-year-old wasn’t commanding a starting place under Steve Bruce and wasn’t justifying getting more opportunities as he seldom scored, but Gayle has landed himself a new deal.

Newcastle confirmed on Wednesday that the out-of-favour striker signed a contract extension, and he posted a picture on Instagram of himself in pre-season training to celebrate.

Gayle joined the Magpies from Crystal Palace in 2016 and has gone on to make 113 appearances in all competitions, scoring 34 goals with 11 assists.

The Englishman was prolific in the Championship (23 goals in 32 games) but has struggled with the step-up in quality in the Premier League (5 goals in 38 games), so it’s surprising he’s been retained.

With Gayle only amassing 503 minutes of top-flight football last season while having Callum Wilson and Joelinton for competition, the 31-year-old is likely to play a bit-part role in 2021/22.
