Jamal Lewis works on fitness with coach and hails player’s transfer

While a lot of players use pre-season to build their fitness back up ahead of the new campaign, Jamal Lewis hasn’t been wasting any time over the summer.

This will be his first campaign at St James Park after signing from Norwich City in 2020 and being loaned back to Carrow Road last season, so he’ll be desperate to impress.

The 23-year-old posted a video on his Instagram story of him undergoing a fitness session with coach Jazzi.FC to improve his conditioning before he meets up with all the Newcastle United players.

Lewis also celebrated Mario Vrancic joining Stoke City on a 12-month deal from Norwich. The left-back and Vrancic were together in the Canaries’ squad 96 times between 2017 and 2020, so they know each other well – Lewis even called the 32-year-old his favourite midfielder.

But all his focus will be on Newcastle now. Lewis will compete with Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie for a starting place this season, so time will tell if he can impress Steve Bruce enough to nail a regular spot in defence. It’s certainly a good sign he’s gone out of his way to improve his fitness level.

In other news, Mirandinha was born on this day in 1959 and made 67 appearances at Newcastle
