England booked their place in the quarter-final of the 2020 European Championships after beating Germany 2-0 at Wembley on Tuesday evening and Alan Shearer was one of many who enjoyed the result.
The 50-year-old, who retired from international football in 2000, was the last England player to score against Germany in a tournament before Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane put Joachim Low’s side to the sword and posted a throwback picture on Instagram ahead of the match.
He also posted a post-match snap of himself with other BBC Sport pundits, enjoying the victory and celebrating wildly as England progressed from the last-16. Shearer’s last contribution for the Three Lions was bagging two goals in three group games in Euro 2000, one of which was against Germany.
England bowed out of the tournament at the group stage, however, after losing twice in Group A, so it wasn’t the happiest memory for Shearer. Nevertheless, the new crop of players are making history and are among the favourites to win this summer’s tournament.
England face Ukraine on Saturday and will have a semi-final clash with Czech Republic or Denmark the following Wednesday if they win. It’s a good opportunity for them to make the final.
