Joe Willock left Newcastle United this summer after his loan spell from Arsenal came to an end and Matty Longstaff has been linked with a move away from St James’ Park, so the Magpies are trying to bolster their midfield ahead of next season.
One player they have on their radar in Mario Lemina and Twitter is talking about it after the Daily Mail said Newcastle are interested in the 27-year-old. Lemina has an uncertain future at Southampton as his contract is up in 2022 and he’s been on the periphery.
The Gabon international joined Southampton from Juventus in 2017 and has gone on to make 52 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals with two assists, but he’s spent the last two seasons out on loan – Galatasaray (September 2019 – August 2020), Fulham (August 2020 – May 2021).
Southampton should be open to cashing in on Lemina rather than losing him for nothing next year, so Newcastle may not have to pay a premium. The 27-year-old should be keen to stay in the Premier League too, so a move may well be on the cards in the coming weeks.
